The U.S. MARINER X became the first spacecraft to reach Mercury. The un-
manned spacecraft flew to wihin 460 miles of the planet on March 29, 1974.
Mercury's surface appears to be much like the moon. It reflects about 6%
of the sunlight it recieves. It is covered by a thin layer of minerals
called silicates in the form of tiny particles. It has broad, flat plains;
steep cliffs; and tiny deep craters. These craters may have formed from
meteors crashing into the planet.
